“My whole life I had terrible vision,” said Douglas Murphy, a patient at Virginia Eye Consultants. Douglas is a junior at North Carolina State University and has been part of the Marine ROTC program since his freshman year. “My dream is to fly planes and that was not possible with my eyesight.” Then he met LASIK surgeon Dr. Elizabeth Yeu at Virginia Eye Consultants.
LASIK Brings Douglas One Step Closer to His Dream
When Douglas started looking into vision correction surgery, he did his research. “We interviewed four surgeons and we were so impressed with her,” he recalls. Together, Douglas, his mother, and Dr. Yeu talked through the best options for him and determined that LASIK surgery would accomplish his vision goals.
“The morning of the surgery, I woke up nervous,” he continued. “I’ve wanted to be a marine since I was 9 years old.” As soon as he arrived at Virginia Eye Consultants, his anxiety went away. “From the front desk to the exam room, everyone was welcoming and calming. I felt like I was the only patient they had.” For Douglas’s mother, Marianne, being able to sit in a viewing area to watch the surgery spoke volumes. “It shows how confident Dr. Yeu and everyone at Virginia Eye Consultants is that they invite you to watch the surgery while they do it.”
Life After LASIK for Douglas
“At the end of his surgery, Douglas sat up and he was so euphoric. I could see his joy. It was contagious!” says Marianne. Douglas recalls how “I had thought there was no one on earth who could improve my vision, and when I got up off that table and realized I could see, it was life changing. I was hugging everybody and they were hugging me back. It was incredible!”
That feeling of relief and joy continued long after he went home. “Every single moment for the first two weeks I had to take the time to process that I was seeing without glasses or contacts. My entire life I’d been wearing glasses.”
Mom continues to be impressed with the care her son received at Virginia Eye Consultants; “Our son was treated as an individual and special. From the front desk to Dr. Yeu to the person checking us out,” said Marianne. “And, now, he’s one step closer to his dream.”

“I want to serve my country and protect others,” Douglas continued. “In the summer of 2020 I will go to officer candidate school and I have to pass so many tests in order to be considered. Without Dr. Yeu and this surgery, there was absolutely no chance.”
