Is LASIK As Safe As Contact Lens Wear?

Last Updated:

Though many of our patients at Virginia Eye Consultants are interested in reducing their reliance on eyeglasses and contact lenses, we are often asked about the safety of the LASIK procedure. LASIK surgery has undergone many advancements in recent years, and our eye care specialists offer all-laser LASIK, which is considered a safe, effective, and blade-free way to significantly improve, if not completely eliminate, refractive errors.

Contact lenses, when used properly, can efficiently correct your vision. Unfortunately, there are still certain risks associated with contact lens use. For example, since each contact lens needs to be inserted and removed by hand, their use could lead to a bacteria infection. In addition, many patients do not remove, change, or clean their contact lenses as frequently as directed, which can ultimately be detrimental to the health of your eyes.

With LASIK surgery, these risks are eliminated, leaving you with clear vision and less maintenance to worry about. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are still potential side effects. This is why Dr. Elizabeth Yeu emphasizes, “It is so important that you get a very careful and thorough examination by a qualified surgeon – one who really cares about the science behind the procedure itself.”

The best way to determine which method of vision correction can suit your unique needs is to schedule a consultation with an experienced LASIK surgeon. If you would like to learn more about LASIK surgery, or to schedule an appointment with one of our doctors, please contact us today.
