LASIK Alternatives

Though LASIK surgery is the most popular laser vision correction procedure, LASIK may not be the best choice for every patient. For example, patients who have thin corneas or suffer from chronic dry eye may not be ideal candidates for LASIK. In addition, patients who are in the military may not be eligible for the procedure. At Virginia Eye Consultants, we offer a wide range of LASIK alternatives that can suit your individual needs. Our experienced eye surgeons can review your medical history, discuss your personal goals, and help you choose a method of vision correction that can best meet your expectations.

EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)

EVO ICL is an excellent vision correction option and is often used as a LASIK alternative for patients who wish to correct myopia (nearsightedness). EVO ICL can correct a wide range of nearsightedness and is appropriate for many patients who are not candidates for LASIK, as well as those who are seeking a flexible vision correction procedure. This biocompatible implantable lens is used to supplement rather than replace the eye’s natural lens. Consequently, the EVO ICL can be replaced or removed in the future if the patient desires an alternative vision correction procedure.

PRK

PRK is often used as a LASIK alternative for patients who have extremely thin corneas or chronic dry eye. The benefits of PRK are very similar to LASIK, and patients can ultimately reduce or eliminate the need for prescription eyewear. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not require the creation of a corneal flap, which can reduce the risk of damage or irritation, particularly for patients who lead extremely active lifestyles such as athletes or military personnel.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

The Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) procedure is similar to cataract surgery, although it is performed for patients without cataracts. By replacing the eye’s natural lens with an intraocular lens (IOL), severe refractive errors can be corrected. As an added benefit, patients who undergo RLE will never develop cataracts.
