QUESTIONS ABOUT CRYSTALENS
What is Crystalens?
Crystalens is an actual lens, a perfect lens, placed in the eye, that focuses exactly like your natural lens. It is the first intraocular lens replacement that provides continuous vision, intermediate and distance. Crystalens restores full functional vision and, generally, completely eliminates the need for glasses, bifocals or contact lenses.
How does Crystalens work?
By using the muscles of your eyes, Crystalens moves just as your eye lens, naturally, in response to messages from the brain. At all different distances, Crystalens enables you to focus just as your natural eye. Patients experience their youthful vision, most without the inconvenience of corrective eyewear.
What is an accommodating Intraocular Lens (IOL)?
Standard lens implants afford vision at a fixed distance. Most patients with single-vision implants need to wear glasses for near vision as well as intermediate vision.
However, Crystalens, an accommodating intraocular lens focuses like the eye’s natural lens. Crystalens restores near, intermediate and distance vision – eliminating your need for glasses or contacts. You’ll see better, feel younger and look more youthful without those glasses.
Who is a good candidate for Crystalens?
Men or women, 45 to 50 years of age (even older) who want to see as well as they did years ago – before they had to push their bifocals back into place. Virginia Eye Consultants can advise if you’re a candidate for this wonderful advancement. Just schedule a consultation and you’re on your way to youthful eyesight.
Can I have Crystalens if I’ve had LASIK?
Yes! The good news is that if you’ve had previous corneal refractive surgery you may be a candidate. Virginia Eye Consultants can best determine your candidacy during your consultation.
Previously, generations of intraocular lenses did not have the capability of responding to your eyes’ muscles. They could only give you single-distance focus. As a consequence, it was necessary to have glasses or contact lenses for near or middle vision. Or, your opthalmologist, during cataract surgery, had to focus one eye for distance and the other for near vision.
Crystalens gives you full range vision by naturally responding to your eyes’ muscles . You will have the very best vision possible – focusing at near, arms-length, or far distances.
The two-year FDA clinical study of Crystalens reported:
- 100% of the patients could read newsletters without glasses or contact lenses,
- 98% passed the driving test without glasses, and
- 92% could see 20/25 or better at distance.
New Medicare Policy Allows Seniors Access to Crystalens and ReSTOR Advanced Lens Technology at Virginia Eye Consultants.
Seniors on Medicare now can choose the presbyopia-correcting Crystalens and ReSTOR lenses, which treat two conditions: cataract removal with lens replacement (a procedure covered by Medicare) and presbyopia (a non-covered service). Patients who select Crystalens or ReSTOR will receive the standard Medicare reimbursement for cataract surgery, and can now pay privately for the presbyopic portion of their treatment.
Presbyopia is an inevitable age-related eye condition that makes it difficult to read or see objects up-close without the use of reading glasses. Presbyopia is the first sign of cataracts and is the most prevalent eye condition in America. It causes the crystalline lens to increasingly stiffen, lose flexibility and cloud, diminishing its focusing ability.
