Getting to Know Dr. Abugo

Associate Professor of Ophthalmology – Eastern Virginia Medical School

Dr. Usiwoma Abugo is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in Orbital and Facial Cosmetic Surgery at Virginia Eye Consultants and Renew Aesthetic Center. Her completion of a rigorous Neuro-ophthalmology and Orbital and Facial Cosmetic Fellowship is a testament to her skill.

Throughout her career, Dr. Abugo has been an avid researcher, starting her career in high school doing research with the National Institutes of Health. She has since published many scientific works and presented at national and international conferences. Her research and academic excellence led to her nomination and acceptance into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society as a senior ophthalmology resident.

Through her career Dr. Abugo has always been grateful for the influence of her mentors. Because of this, she has created an active social media mentoring platform under which she mentors many healthcare professionals and students who have dreams for excellence in medicine. She was selected for the American Academy of Ophthalmology/Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Minority Mentorship Program for 2017 and she was the invited keynote speaker for the MiMentor Program in January 2018 in California.

Dr. Abugo was selected to join the Communications Secretariat/Public Advisory Committee for the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2018. Her ideas for innovation in science and research have led her to be the Women in Ophthalmology Ambassador for the Ophthalmology Innovation Summit. During her free time she enjoys watching futbol and football. She can always be found rooting for the University of Notre Dame, the Baltimore Ravens, and Juventus.
