Dr. John Sheppard, a Pittsburgh native, earned his Bachelors Degree in Biology, a Masters Degree in Medical Science, and his M.D. Degree on a full Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship at Brown University. After an internship in pediatrics at the University of Virginia, he spent four years with the U.S. Navy as 6th Fleet Medical Officer and Chief of Family Practice. Dr. Sheppard completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh's Eye and Ear Institute. He completed a 30 month fellowship in
corneal disease,
uveitis, third world blindness, and ocular immunology at the Francis I. Proctor Research Foundation at the University of California, San Francisco with prestigious Heed-Knapp, Burroughs-Wellcome, and NIH National Research Fellowship awards.
In 1989, Dr. Sheppard joined Virginia Eye Consultants and the ophthalmology, microbiology, and molecular cell biology faculty at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Sheppard now serves as Ophthalmology Program Director at
EVMS, Clinical Director of the
Thomas R. Lee Center for Ocular Pharmacology, and with the EVMS Development Committee. He has participated as a principal investigator in over 40 clinical research trials for major pharmaceutical companies and the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Sheppard is a Mentor Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology and co-founder of EyeRx Research and ProVision Network. He has presented over 500 guest lectures and visiting professorships nationwide, published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, chapters and abstracts, and reviewed over 120 expert cases. Dr. Sheppard received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award and is listed in the Best Doctors in America. He serves on the Academy editorial board for EyeNet Magazine, and as Uveitis Editor for eMedicine online.
