Eyelid Margin Disease & Blepharitis

BlepharitisEyelid margin disease is a common problem characterized by persistent inflammation of the eyelids. Symptoms include eye and eyelid irritation, itchiness of the eye, and redness of the eye. This condition frequently occurs in people who have a tendency towards oily skin, dandruff, or dry eyes. With blepharitis, both the upper and lower eyelids become coated with oily particles and bacteria near the base of the eyelashes.

What Causes Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is caused by large amounts of bacteria around the eyelashes that can cause dandruff-like scales and particles to form along the lashes and eyelid margins. It may cause itchiness, redness, irritation, and stinging or burning of the eye. It can also be associated with meibomitis (dysfunction and inflammation of the oil glands of the eyelids).

How is Blepharitis treated?

Blepharitis is often a chronic condition, but it can be controlled with the following treatment:

Warm Compresses and Eyelid Scrubs – Use a warm compress over your closed eyelids for at least one minute, repeat two or three times (rewet the cloth as it cools). This will loosen scales and debris around your eyelashes. It will also help dilute and soften oil secretions, preventing the development of a chalazion.

Antibiotic ointment – Your eye doctor may prescribe an antibiotic ointment to be used at the base of the eyelashes before bedtime. Artificial tears or steroid eye drops may also be prescribed.

Good hygiene - Because blepharitis can be a persistent problem, make sure you practice good skin and eyelid hygiene to help prevent recurrences. Washing your hair, scalp, and eyebrows with antibacterial shampoo can also help control blepharitis.
