Our State of the Art Facilities

During Dr. Sheppard’s first days in Norfolk, he envisioned a facility that would offer patients multi-specialty integrated care – under one roof – by audiologists, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, otolaryngologists, nutritionists and dentists, all working in concert to provide a balanced, technically unsurpassed yet holistic approach to medical care. He imagined a facility infused with light, an art gallery, surrounded by trees and water, punctuated with mountain laurel – even a piano for impromptu concerts. These elements would have profound value in making his patients feel comfortable, confident and cared for.

Dr. Sheppard’s vision became a reality in November 2005 with the dedication of VEC’s new state-of-the-art Central Office.

This 34,000 square foot facility is located on Military Highway South, just off I-264, Exit 13A. We are open Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday hours.

This facility ranks in the 97th percentile of all ophthalmic facilities in the U.S. and includes 24 examination rooms, a climate-controlled laser suite for the Alcon Allegretto Wavelight excimer and Intralase Femtosecond lasers for laser vision correction, a fully state-licensed ambulatory surgery center, a full service hearing healthcare center staffed by licensed audiologists, a dermatology clinic with a fully equipped Mohs histopathology lab and cosmetic skin care, and a complete dental treatment and surgery center including a clinic for the study and treatment of Sjögren’s syndrome. Our state licensed ambulatory surgery center is the first family-centered surgery center in Virginia, complete with observation rooms, where family members are only a few feet away from their loved ones during surgery. Family and friends can see the actual surgery in real time directly through the surgeon’s microscope on our digital video monitors. The latest techniques are practiced here, using world-class technology, techniques and instrumentation.

Our new Hampton Office expansion was completed in January 2010, with 6 full examination lanes and complete digital ophthalmic testing capabilities. With over 3000 square feet adjacent to the newly remodeled ground floor lobby, we have more than doubled our size and expanded our capabilities to enable minor surgical procedures as well as full cataract and refractive surgery work ups on site. We will staff this office virtually every week day from Monday through Friday, thereby providing our patients with state of the art care as well as more rapid access and convenient scheduling.
